September Health News

Here are a few important Back – to – School reminders:

  • Freshmen and transfer students are required to have a new physical (done over the summer) as well as an updated immunization record on file in order to stay in school.  While returning students are not required to submit a physical every year, unless playing a sport, it is very helpful to the nurse if you send in a copy of your son’s annual physical, especially if there have been any changes to his health.
  • If you would like your son to receive over the counter medicines such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen during the school day you need to send in the Consent for Over the Counter Medications 2016-2017 health form.  Please make sure both you and your son’s physician have signed the form.
  • If your student has a health condition or needs special care during the school day, such as medication, treatments, or monitoring, please inform the school nurse.  Individual health care plans help keep students safe and healthy.
  • Allergy & Asthma season is predicted to hit us HARD this year.  Monitor all symptoms closely and follow your health care provider’s advice.  Medical care plans, rescue inhalers and Epi-pens are a necessity, and may save a life!  Students should have a separate physician order for their inhaler and Epi-pen on file.  Please make sure your son has his inhaler and/or Epi-pen with him at all times as well as a spare in the health room.
  • PLEASE have a current and working phone number with the school in the event your son needs your attention.
  • Visit the school nurse web page (found under Admissions, Student Health Forms) for more information on student health, school forms, and other helpful links.
  • Substitute school nurses are needed throughout the school year.  Requirements are an active RN license in the state of MD, current CPR, and STAND training.  If interested, please contact me at pbezirdjian@msjnet.edu.

Feel free to call me if you need assistance with any of the above.

Pam Bezirdjian, RN, MPH

School Nurse

Principal's Newsletter

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Friday, September 9, 2016, was a very special day for us on the campus of Mount Saint Joseph.  Over a thousand people gathered together in the Smith Center to celebrate the Eucharist, to ask for God's blessing on a successful year, to pray for all of our families and to remember all those who were affected by the tragedy on September 11, 2001.

I am always spiritually moved by the reverence and respect our young men give to this service. To witness our students, faculty and staff come together in prayer is impressive and a blessing for Catholic education!

Prior to Mass, we were honored to welcome Seth A. Gordon-Lipkin, Education Director of the Washington, DC regional office of the Anti-Defamation League.  Mr. Gordon-Lipkin was there to present an award to Mount Saint Joseph High School for our outstanding work for justice and peace which has been accomplished both on and off the campus. The ADL organization recognized us as a top high school in which there is "No Place for Hate" as written on the banner which will be displayed in our cafeteria.

Thanks to moderators Mr. Kevin Shearer and Mr. Michael O'Donnell, many of our students are able to lead their classmates in programs which combat issues such as bullying, racial injustice, discrimination and address other social issues through our No Bystanders Program. These young men also travel to local middle schools to facilitate discussions with students to promote positive behaviors and to prevent bullying and acts of prejudice.

We were also recognized for our school-wide Martin Luther King, Jr. assembly, which focused on social injustices and discrimination and efforts by Dr. King and others to promote justice and equality. In addition, we were recognized for our work in the local community of Irvington.  Ms. Sarah Slingluff, Mr. Jason Ader, and many of our students tutor at the Sarah M. Roach Elementary School each week. In addition, many of our faculty participated in prayer walks with the Irvington community as a sign of solidarity with our neighbors.

I am most grateful to these faculty members as well as our students for their initiative and leadership in helping others, especially the poor and marginalized. Within our own school, it is always my hope that every student who enters our doors will feel welcomed, accepted, respected and loved, regardless of their race, sexual identity, disability, or family dynamics. For it is written in the Fundamental Principles of the Xaverian Brothers:

Cultivate a sincere friendship

and a warm affection for your sisters and brothers

for it is in the manifestation of honest concern and love for each other

that you and they will show you are daughters and sons of Ryken

And disciples of Jesus.

This was written around 1839 by Theodore James Ryken, the founder of the Xaverian Brothers.  How appropriate today even though written some one hundred seventy five plus years ago!

As we progress through this school year the month of October allows us the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather and fall surroundings. This month is packed with many events, some of which I wish to mention:

October 16th the Mother/Son Communion Breakfast and Grandmothers of our senior class will take place in the Smith Center/Memorial Gym. We would like to recognize the grandmothers of the Class of 2017. When purchasing your ticket remember Mount Saint Joseph will have a complimentary ticket as a thank-you from us.

October 19th will be Testing Day for freshmen, sophomores and juniors. These students will be taking the PSAT.  Each year our scores improve which validates the hard work in the classroom of our students and faculty. The test is especially important to the juniors for qualifying score will make them eligible for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

October 22nd marks the conclusion of Spirit Week with many activities on campus. Come out and root the Gaels to victory!

October 28th ends the first marking period. Keep checking PlusPortals for your son’s grades!  You can now also find our daily announcements posted on PlusPortals.

October 30th is our annual Open House from 11am to 2 PM. Get the word out to prospective families and tell them about the great things that happen to you when you join our great community!

Hope to see you around campus!

God bless,

Dave Norton

October Newsletter – Mr. Greg McDivitt, Director of Studies

PSAT Testing Day

On Wednesday, October 19th classes will not meet and instead all freshmen, sophomores and juniors will take a level of the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, or PSAT.  Sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT/NMSQT, and most freshmen will take the PSAT 8/9; freshmen in the 410 and 420 math classes will take the NMSQT version.  These exams benefit educators by providing indications of our students’ strengths and weaknesses, and they benefit students by providing practice for the SAT and ACT, which are important standardized exams utilized in college admissions.  Juniors who score highly on the PSAT may become eligible for college scholarship opportunities (NMSQT = National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test).

Seniors do not attend school this day.  This day is an excellent opportunity for seniors to work on college applications or to visit university campuses.

It is very important for students to get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and have a positive frame of mind before taking the test.  Students are encouraged to prepare individually for the test by looking online at resources provided by the College Board.

All freshmen, sophomores and juniors must report to school on Wednesday, October 19th at the regular time and be in HOMEROOM before 8:00 a.m. Students must be IN DRESS CODE.

Testing will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will end for most students between 11:45 a.m. and 11:55 a.m.

Students should bring two #2 pencils.

The College Board also recommends that students bring a scientific calculator to use on the portions of the Math test that permit a calculator.  Four-function calculators or most graphing calculators are also acceptable (the latter must lack a QWERTY keyboard or internet connectivity).  The use of iPads or cell phones during the test is explicitly NOT permitted.  The portion of the Math test on which calculators are permitted can be completed without a calculator.

Other important information about school provisions on Testing Day, Wednesday, October 19th:

  • BREAKFAST:  The MSJ cafeteria will serve breakfast from 7:00 a.m. to 7:55 a.m.
  • LUNCH FOOD:  A limited lunch menu will be offered from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
  • MSJ BUS TRANSPORTATION:  The MSJ buses will depart campus at 12:15 p.m.
  • AFTER SCHOOL PROVISIONS:  The MSJ cafeteria will remain open until 2:00 p.m.  The library will be open until 4:00 p.m.

The testing schedule below pertains only to those students previously approved for extended time by Mrs. Kate Chapman, Director of Special Programs, and who have all necessary testing accommodation documentation on file at MSJ. Opportunities will be provided through the DePaul program or Counseling Department for all students taking the PSAT with extended time to fill out administrative portions of the exam in the week prior to Wednesday, October 19th, which result in the end times listed below.  If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Chapman at kchapman@msjnet.edu.

  • For students who receive 50% extended testing time, dismissal will take place at approximately 12:30 p.m.

  • For students who receive 100% extended testing time, dismissal will take place at approximately 2:00 p.m.

Report Cards

The first marking period of this school year will end on Friday, October 28th.  Report cards for this marking period will be emailed to parents on Friday, November 4th. We will continue this procedure in the second and third marking periods.  The final report card will be mailed to your home in June.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, November 10th, by appointment only.  Details regarding registration for these appointments will follow in the November edition of this newsletter.

Principal's Newsletter – November 2016

Dear Parents and Guardians:

It's hard to believe that the first marking period is over! These past months have seen us on an unbelievably fast-paced schedule full of calendar events and fanfare with little time to breathe or relax. We try so hard to get the school year off to a great start we sometimes forget that it is in the common, ordinary, unspectacular flow of everyday life that we become available for God.

Hard work is very important in accomplishing goals and meeting future aspirations but so is simple times of conversation, sharing, and praying which are just as important, if not more.

God has a way of letting us know when we need to slow down and "smell the roses!"

He sends people in and out of our lives that affect us in such a profound way. I can't tell you the number of times I have been part of an unexpected conversation that helps me put my life in proper perspective.

A few weeks ago, a MSJ graduate came to pay me a visit. He wanted to talk, reminisce, and share what was going on in his life. Things were not working out the way he had planned. I certainly did not have all the answers but with the help of the Holy Spirit, I listened and assured him that God would take care of him simply because this young man was a good and loving person. A few days later I received a letter from him saying thanks for being a dad, a mentor, and a friend. I read his letter with joy and thanksgiving for helping me understand that it is in giving that we receive!

I believe these types of experiences happen many times on the campus of Mount Saint Joseph. These enduring personal relationships exist between faculty and students and between fellow students and other members of our community. This is part of the mission of the school coming alive. I pray that is the way it will always be.

As we start the new marking period we rejoice in the tremendous job our students did in and out of the classroom. When over fifty percent of the student population work hard enough to make the Honor Roll, then we know they understand the challenge set before them. For those that did not experience the success commensurate with their ability, I would ask you to use the PlusPortals system to monitor their grades. If you do not feel comfortable with navigating this computer program, a series of tutorials will take you through each module of the system. These tutorials can be found as soon as you open the program under PARENTPLUS INTERACTIVE PORTAL GUIDE!

As a school, Mount Saint Joseph will be utilizing the PlusPortals System for school communications. We hope to have the majority of emails and messages come from the PlusPortals System and use our website for primarily communicating with alumni and prospective students. It will be a transition with some expected problems, but we hope in the long run, it will produce a more effective and consistent method of improving communication between the school and home.

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I pray that your family times together will be full of those unassuming powerful moments of ordinary family life. An abundance of blessings to you and your family this Thanksgiving Season!

God bless,

David Lee Norton

Principal

Parents’ Notes

Greg McDivitt, Director of Studies

One of the great things about the cyclical nature of academic life in schools is that students get chances to start over.  In class, old quizzes, tests and projects are completed while new problems, topics and ideas arise and invite exploration.  The first quarter was filled with challenges for all, significant successes for many, and real struggles for some.  The start of the second quarter represents an opportunity for every student to start anew on his yearlong journey of learning.  As we move forward, you are encouraged to continue to check PlusPortals regularly and email your son’s teachers when you have questions or concerns.  You are also encouraged to schedule a Parent-Teacher conference.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, November 10, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.  If you would like to meet with some or all of your son’s teachers, you are encouraged to sign up for appointments via an online self-registration system.  You can also request appointments by email.  Please request appointments by using one of the options listed below.

Principal's Newsletter December 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Just recently, Brother Edward Driscoll, C.F.X., the General Superior for the Xaverian Brothers, mailed to me and other Xaverian administrators a publication to use for the Advent/Christmas season. In my past communications with Brother, he has always encouraged me to find at least fifteen minutes in each school day for reflection and prayer. In my Xaverian training I was taught to answer, "Yes, Brother, I will do that."  I will try now but because the school day is so demanding of my time, I often procrastinate about fitting in the fifteen minutes, and it becomes five or fewer minutes dedicated to prayer. The prayer book that Brother Edward sent is “Advent 2016: Wondrous Days of Comfort and Joy,” by Janet Schaeffler, OP. In the book the Advent/Christmas season is explained as prayer being both comfort and challenge. I'll need to work harder on the challenge part!

The Advent/Christmas season comes alive on our campus in so many ways, and it's an opportunity for our faculty, staff, and students to prepare for the coming of Our Lord, Jesus Christ in our everyday lives!

Here are some of the ways we hope to recognize our living God:

Each morning and at the end of every school day, we will pray specific advent prayers as a school community. Each prayer will reflect on a theme that will help us experience the comfort of Jesus from day to day.

Our campus will be decorated with Christmas trees, garlands, and wreaths which reflect the joys of the season. Even our Mount Tower will be a beacon of light for the community of Irvington as it signifies the light of Jesus Christ in our daily lives and our prayers for them during this season.

Our school liturgies will be on December 2nd, 8th, and the 10th. Each one has a different significance, but all will be of a Xaverian influence. On Friday, December 2nd we will celebrate the feast of Saint Francis Xavier (actual date for feast day is 12/3), the patron saint of the congregation of Xaverian Brothers.  Brother Charles Cully, C.F.X, of our faculty, will lead the Brothers from the residence on Beechfield Avenue and other Brothers in the area, in a renewal of their vows in front of the Mount Saint Joseph community. This is a special day for us when we celebrate Xaverian education. I will ask all students and faculty to wear their Sunday best (coat and tie for students), to signify the importance of the day. We will also announce the winner of the Theodore James Ryken, C.F.X. Award. The award recognizes an adult member of the school community who proclaims the Gospel of Jesus Christ, participates in the school's community of faith, nurtures members of the community, has a commitment to academic excellence, recognizes the talent of individuals, recognizes the importance of educating the whole person, and fulfills the Gospel’s call to peace and justice. We welcome you to come join us in prayer on this very special day. The award winner is top secret!

We also invite you to our liturgy for Feast of the Immaculate Conception which will be at 8:00 a.m., in the auditorium. We are on an hour delay start of school that day. We give our students the option of attending Mass at their parish or celebrating with us as a school community. This is another opportunity for everyone to pray together during this season of Advent.

On December 10th a Mass is held for our juniors and their families. The Junior Ring Ceremony, starting at 7 p.m., will be held at Saint Joseph Monastery Church. Their class ring signifies a commitment to Mount Saint Joseph as they become the leaders of our community and brothers to each other. The ring also makes a terrific early Christmas present!

I don't want to leave out some of the social events such as the Christmas Concert and the Mothers' Club Basket Bingo. Mrs. Esserwein and Mr. Norris will have our band and choir students ready for an exciting, seasonal event. A good time will be had by all! The event is Thursday, December 8th, in the auditorium from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. - Fa La La La La!  Our mothers are working very hard on their bingo which is held on Saturday, December 3rd. Tickets are required and can be purchased for $25 from Michele Uhler, our Mothers’ Club president) at shel1992@verizon.net. Another festive event!

Lastly, I want to bring to your attention our annual Toy Drive to benefit the families of Saint Bernadine's on Edmondson Avenue. Under the direction of Ms. Coyne, Mrs. Gonzalez and the Student Council, we will provide toys, gloves, shoes and hats for over five hundred children and adults. A simple act of kindness that means so much to others!

Please try to make some or all of these events! I pray that your Advent/Christmas preparations bring you comfort and challenges during the season. My best wishes and prayers for a joyful Christmas and a family celebration that is all you wished it would be!

God bless us, every one!
